Across Generations, Across Europe: A Winter Journey Through Italy & Switzerland

Travelling internationally with a multigenerational group comes with its own kind of energy. Everyone has different interests, different stories and different things they want to see. Someone is looking for the perfect photograph, someone wants to know the history behind a place, someone is excited about the food, and someone is simply enjoying being somewhere new.

Our winter journey through Italy and Switzerland in 2024 brought all of this together.

From the mountains and lakes of Switzerland to the historic towns, vineyards, coastlines and food of Italy, every day brought something different. What made the trip even more special was experiencing it with people from different generations and getting to see the destinations through everyone’s eyes.

Lugano: Mountains, Lakes and Plenty of Photographs

Our journey took us from Milan towards Zurich, with a day in beautiful Lugano.

We headed up to the top of the mountain, where the views were incredible. Naturally, there were plenty of photographs along the way. We also spent time by the lake and went on a lake cruise.

It was a relaxed start to the trip and a great way for everyone to settle into travelling together. There was time to explore, take photographs, enjoy the scenery and simply spend time with one another.

We also made a stop at Fidenza Village along the way. It was one of those additional stops that added something different to the day and gave everyone a chance to explore at their own pace.

Cinque Terre: Lunch by the Sea

Around lunchtime, we reached Manarola in Cinque Terre.

The colourful houses against the hills and the blue sea made it one of the most picturesque places we visited. We walked around the town, explored the lanes and had lunch near the seaside before taking the train onward.

Travelling with a group across generations meant that everyone had their own way of enjoying the place. Some wanted photographs, others wanted to explore the streets, and some were happy to sit and take in the view.

By the time we left, everyone had something to talk about.

Pisa and Florence: A Walk Through Italian History

Our next stops included Pisa and Florence.

At Pisa, we saw the famous Leaning Tower and spent time exploring the area around it.

Florence was a completely different experience. The city is full of history, architecture and stories, and walking through its streets gave us a chance to learn more about Italy’s past while experiencing the city first-hand.

For a group travelling together, these historical stops also became great conversation starters. Different generations brought different interests to the experience, and there was always someone asking a question, sharing something they knew or stopping to look at something that caught their attention.

Tuscany: A Detour Worth Taking

Tuscany gave us a chance to see another side of Italy.

We took a little detour to visit a vineyard and enjoyed the beautiful countryside along the way. It was not just the destination that stood out. Our cab driver was extremely friendly and nice, and that small interaction added to the experience.

Meeting people along the way is a big part of international travel. A friendly conversation, a helpful local or someone who goes out of their way to make your journey easier can stay with you long after you leave the place.

Naples: Pizza and Evening Lights

By evening, we reached Naples.

The city was lively, colourful and full of energy. We explored the city in the evening and, of course, had pizza.

Naples and pizza go together, and having it there was an experience in itself. After a long day of sightseeing, sitting together over a meal was exactly what everyone needed.

Food became a big part of the trip. Every region had something different to offer, and meals gave the group time to relax and catch up after a day of exploring.

Pompeii: Two Hours of History

The next day, we visited Pompeii.

We had around two hours to explore, which gave us enough time to see the major parts of the ancient city and learn about its history.

Walking through the old streets and seeing the remains of homes and public spaces made the history much easier to understand. It was not just another historical site on the itinerary. We were actually walking through the place and seeing how people lived centuries ago.

For the younger members of the group, it was a chance to learn something new. For the older members, it was another opportunity to connect what they had read or heard about with a real place.

Amalfi Coast: Blue Seas, Good Food and an Unexpected Compliment

The Amalfi Coast was another highlight of the trip.

We had lunch by the sea, walked along the coastline and visited the Duomo. The blue water, colourful buildings and beautiful surroundings made it a perfect day for photographs.

There was also a funny moment that everyone in the group remembers.

One of our group members received a compliment from the staff and was compared to Shah Rukh Khan. It was completely unexpected and gave everyone a good laugh.

And then there was the croissant.

It may have been one of the best croissants of the entire trip.

With the sea in front of us, good food on the table and everyone together, it was one of those simple travel moments that made the day even better.

Back to Milan: Duomo, Sforzesco Castle and Tiramisu

We eventually returned to Milan, but there was still plenty to see.

We had dinner and visited the Duomo before heading towards Sforza Castle. After all the sightseeing, we stopped at a coffee shop for coffee and tiramisu.

It was the perfect little break.

Later, we went to Navigli for dinner. The canals were lit up with fairy lights, giving the evening a completely different atmosphere.

After days of moving between cities, historical sites, mountains and coastlines, it was a lovely way to end the journey.

Travelling Together Across Generations

One of the best things about travelling with a multigenerational group is that no two people experience the trip in exactly the same way.

A senior traveller may be particularly interested in the history of Florence or Pompeii. A younger traveller may be more excited about exploring the streets of Cinque Terre or photographing the Amalfi Coast. Someone else may remember the pizza in Naples, the vineyard in Tuscany or that perfect cup of coffee in Milan.

And then there are the moments that everyone shares.

  • The photographs.
  • The meals.
  • The train journeys.
  • The conversations between sightseeing stops.
  • The little detours.
  • The jokes that keep coming up throughout the trip.

International travel also gives different generations an opportunity to learn from each other. Older travellers can share stories and experiences, while younger travellers often bring curiosity, technology and a different way of looking at the destination.

At the same time, travelling together means learning about the culture of the places you visit.

In Switzerland, we experienced the mountains, lakes and relaxed beauty of places like Lugano.

In Italy, we moved through historic cities, coastal towns, vineyards and food destinations, each with its own character. We experienced Italian history in Florence and Pompeii, coastal life along the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre, and the food culture of Naples and Milan.

More Than Just Seeing Europe

Our Italy and Switzerland trip was packed with places, food, history and experiences.

From standing on top of a mountain in Lugano to taking a cruise on the lake. From walking through Manarola and having lunch by the sea to seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa. From exploring Florence and taking a detour through a Tuscan vineyard to eating pizza in Naples. From walking through Pompeii to enjoying the blue waters of the Amalfi Coast. And finally, from coffee and tiramisu in Milan to dinner beside the fairy lights of Navigli.

It was an international journey shared by different generations, and that made every destination a little more interesting. Because when you travel together, you don’t just visit a country. You experience its food, history, people and culture together, while creating a collection of stories that everyone in the group can take home.
